"Cristina is a highly effective piano educator. When choosing a piano teacher online, I could search from hundreds of piano teachers, and with previous experience in contracting music workshop providers for universities and studying education at IOE UCL, I felt that I had developed an understanding of what could make an effective piano teacher. With this, I chose Cristina, despite her integrity, in suggesting other teachers more geared towards teaching popular music.
Even before our first session, it was evident that Cristina was deeply enthusiastic about piano pedagogy and education through her time dedicated to leading CPD courses in music and education, and her role as an ABRSM volunteer and HLR. Learning more about Cristina, she dedicates a day to researching piano education and playing herself including learning from some of the pre-eminent authorities in piano teaching such as Joanna Garcia. Together, I could understand that this continuous development demonstrated care that would support me thoroughly within my learning journey. This was clearly evidenced in our lessons so far, where she has prepared well, and developed systematic foundations of practice methods, and later sent session summaries to aid and retain learning. She is also highly resourced.
In terms of Cristina's approach, Cristina's philosophy focuses on developing skills for the musician beyond examinations, which I think is well and carefully considered to support a learning journey. This is informed by her research, that stays up-to-date (and that follows with academic articles), that aims overall to develop playing in an efficient and comprehensive manner, whilst inspiring joy in music. Thus this includes an approach that extends beyond reading with sheet music, with improvisation and ear training.
Lastly, Cristina is professional, and holistic. She considers the individual's life circumstances affecting learning to play the piano, in my case moving abroad to continue HE. Her coaching skills also allow for careful reflection for the learner."
